6th National Conference on Corporate Social Responsibility: Issues, Challenges & Prospects for Inclusive Growth of India
Al-Barkaat Institute of Management Studies, Aligarh organized its 6th National Conference on March 8, 2014. Speaking as Keynote Speaker of the Inaugural Function of the Conference on Corporate Social Responsibility: Issues, Challenges & Prospects for Inclusive Growth of India, Chief Guest Dr. Vishnuprasad Nagadevara, Professor, Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore, said “Businesses will have to work selflessly to improve the lot of the people”. He explained how companies will have to orient their policies keeping the societal good in mind. Dr. Ahmad Mujtaba Siddiqui, Joint Secretary of the Society felicitated the Chief Guest and the Guest of Honor by presenting bouquet, shawl and memento. Dr. Waseem Ahmad, Director of the Institute welcomed the guests which included the Chief Guest and Keynote Speaker Dr. Vishnuprasad Nagadevara; Guest of Honor, Professor Sunil Dayal, Head-Corporate Resource Centre, Apeejay Institute of Technology and Management, Greater Noida; Professor Kazi F. Jalal, Harvard University, US; Mr. Syed Muhammad Afzal (IPS), founder and honorable Executive Member, Al-Barkaat Educational Society and IG, Special Police Establishment, Lokayukta, Madhya Pradesh, and Mr. S.M. Aman, Honorable Executive Member, Al-Barkaat Educational Society. The Guest of Honor, Professor Sunil Dayal emphasized the importance of Corporate Social Responsibility in the contemporary business scenario and hoped that business organizations will approach the issue with compassion and commitment. According to him, the society and its leaders have to build a system where the market demand is not maximized rather minimized. Mr. Syed Muhammad Afzal said that Corporate Social Responsibility might be a novel concept for the western world but it is embedded in the Indian cultural ethos. He stressed on the Social Responsibility of every individual. He explained how Al-Barkaat Educational Society was established as an effort in this direction. A presentation on Project Raahat by Ms. Taab Anwer Zuberi, in-charge, Al-Barkaat Afternoon School described the conceptualization and successful execution of the idea of providing quality education to the socially deprived sections of the society. Dr. F.U. Siddiqui, Coordinator, Al-Barkaat Educational Institutions also graced the occasion. The dignitaries on the dais released the Abstract Book of the Conference. The students of the Institute presented Tarana of Al-Barkaat and National Anthem. The Vote of thanks was presented by Associate Professor Mr. Saif Azam and the program was conducted by Assistant Professor Mr. Faraz Ahmad. The Conference was divided into three technical sessions chaired by Professor Parvaiz Talib, Department of Business Administration, AMU, Aligarh; Prof. Syed Naushad Ahmad, Department of Geography, AMU, Aligarh & Dr. Rais Ahmad, Associate Professor, Department of Agricultural Economics and Business Management, AMU, Aligarh and Professor Mohd. Khalid Azam, Department of Business Administration, AMU, Aligarh & Dr. Shehroz Alam Rizvi, Associate Professor, Department of Economics, AMU, Aligarh respectively. The best three paper presentations adjudged by a Jury of eminent academicians were awarded in the Valedictory Session. The Valedictory Session featured an address by the Guest of Honor, Professor Kazi F. Jalal who emphasized how Corporate Social Responsibility programs, in the long-run benefitted not only the society but also the business organizations undertaking them. The Chief Guest of the session Brigadier (Retd.) Syed Ahmad Ali, Pro Vice-Chancellor, AMU, Aligarh was felicitated by Dr. Ahmad Mujtaba Siddiqui, Joint Secretary, Al-Barkaat Educational Society. Dr. Ali was of the view that companies don't shy away from their societal responsibility but we as responsible citizens should also lend them a helping hand and consider ourselves as valuable stakeholders in the progress of the nation. The report on the Conference was read out by Mr. Faize Nabi, Associate Professor & Head-CDC, ABIMS. Distinguished attendees were requested to provide feedback and highlight the areas of improvement. The Ceremony was conducted by Assistant Professor Mr. S.H. Zaini. The Vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. F.U. Siddiqui, Coordinator, Al-Barkaat Educational Institutions. It was followed by the soulful Al-Barkaat Tarana & National Anthem. A large number of distinguished guests from academics, scholars, students and media persons attended the Conference.
Industrial Visit
An Industrial visit for MBA Final and First year students was arranged. The students visited Parle-G Biscuits Pvt. Ltd., Neemrana, Alwar, Rajasthan on April 05, 2014. The company executives briefed the students about their company and the line of business they are engaged in. After that the students were shown the Manufacturing Facilities. The Industrial Visit proved to be very informative and educative for the students.
Orientation Program
A two week orientation program under the name “Nalanda Project” for the faculty of minority managed degree colleges was organized in the Al-Barkaat campus from March 25- April 8, 2014. The Ministry of Minority Affairs, Government of India had selected the UGC Academic Staff College of Aligarh Muslim University as a Nodal Agency for this project. Dr. F.U. Siddiqui, Coordinator, Al-Barkaat Educational Institutions was the course coordinator. A large number of participants from all over the country including the faculty of Al-Barkaat Educational Institutions participated in it. It was a great learning experience for the participants as they not only benefitted immensely from the expertise of the erudite resource persons but were also able to enjoy the famous hospitality of Al-Barkaat. The program also included visits to the famous educational and cultural hotspots in Aligarh. The participants expressed their happiness and all of them were of the view that it was indeed a great learning experience for them. The Valedictory session was graced by Mr. S.M. Afzal (IPS), IG, Special Police Establishment, Lokayukta, Madhya Pradesh. Professor A.R. Kidwai, Director, UGC Academic Staff College and Dr. F.U. Siddiqui, Coordinator, Al-Barkaat Educational Institutions & also the course coordinator thanked the participants for their cooperation.
Workshop on “Communication Skills”
A Workshop on “Communication Skills” by Dr. M. Amirullah Khan, Associate Professor, Department of English, AMU, Aligarh was organized on April 26, 2014 for MBA Final & First year students Dr. M. Amirullah Khan emphasized the importance of communication skills and explained to the students how good communication skills will hold them in good stead in the modern corporate world. The students were taken through a series of interesting and lively communication games and were made to understand the nuances of communication. Dr. Waseem Ahmad, Director, ABIMS welcomed the guest and advised the students to utilize the opportunity fully and try to gain the maximum benefits out of it. On this occasion, all the faculty members were also present.
Firaaq
Farewell party under the name “Firaaq” was organized by the MBA First year students for the Final year on April 29, 2014. It was a fun filled evening with exciting performances like mimicry, singing and skits by the students which lifted the mood of the evening. Mr. Mohd. Zeeshan Siddiqui and Ms. Sana Hashmi were adjudged Mr. Farewell and Ms. Farewell respectively. Mr. S.M. Jafar Husain and Ms. Asra Wasi were awarded the titles of Mr. Evening and Ms. Evening respectively. The program was followed by a sumptuous and scrumptious dinner. Dr. Waseem Ahmad, Director, ABIMS along with the faculty members was also present on the occasion.
Guest Lecture
A Guest Lecture by Mr. Faridoon Shahryar, Content Head, Broadband, Bollywoodhungama.com was held on September 1, 2014 for MBA Final & First year students. Mr. Shahryar elucidated on all the major and minor aspects of shaping one's career in a fruitful manner. He emphasized on the importance of communication and networking skills and also stressed on the necessity of grooming one's personality. On this occasion, Dr. Waseem Ahmad, Director, Al-Barkaat Institute of Management Studies (ABIMS) along with all the faculty members was present.
Workshop
A Workshop on the topic "Entrepreneurship: A Career option for Business Graduates" by Dr. Asif Ali Syed, Associate Professor, Department of Business Administration, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh was organized on September 10, 2014 for MBA Final & First year students. The students were made to realize and appreciate the importance of entrepreneurship as a career for business graduates. The important role that an entrepreneur plays in the development of economy of a country was emphasized and the students were made aware of the necessary skills and temperament required for budding entrepreneurs. On this occasion, Dr. Waseem Ahmad, Director, ABIMS along with all the faculty members was present.
Dental Camp
A free Dental Camp was organized on September 27, 2014. In the camp, city based dental surgeons, Dr. S.M. Danish and Dr. Imran of City Hospital conducted a free and comprehensive dental checkup and gave advice on a case-by-case basis. Dr. Waseem Ahmad, Director, ABIMS along with the Faculty Members thanked them and hoped that such camps would continue to be organized in future also.
Swachh Bharat Abhiyan
A cleanliness drive was organized as part of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan in the campus on October 10, 2014. On this occasion, Dr. Waseem Ahmad, Director, ABIMS administered a cleanliness pledge to the students. Dr. Ahmad emphasized the importance of cleanliness and hygiene and symbolically wielded the broom along with all the faculty members and the students.
Interaction
Students of MBA Final year organized 'Milan 2014 - an interactive session for the MBA First year students on October 11, 2014. 'Milan 2014' provided a pedestal for healthy interaction between the first and final year students. It was an ice breaking session to develop camaraderie between them. The program was conducted in the presence of faculty members.
Guest Lecture
A Guest Lecture by Dr. Mohibul Haque, Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science, Aligarh Muslim University on the topic 'Role of Media in Democracy' was organized on October 18, 2014 for MBA Final & First Year Students. Welcoming the guest, Dr. Waseem Ahmad, Director, ABIMS thanked him for acceding to his request at a very short notice and hoped that the students would be greatly benefitted from his rich knowledge and wide experience. Dr. Haque explained the nuances of the role of media and its contribution in shaping and sometimes manufacturing public opinion. He also touched upon the various aspects of media and stressed on the importance of understanding the role of media in making and breaking images and personalities. The priorities of the media have undergone a tectonic shift in recent years and nobody can afford to ignore it completely, one must be attuned to the rapidly changing geo-political scenario and be prepared to react accordingly according to Dr. Haque. He was also of the view that democracy is one of the best forms of government and the essence of democracy is dissent, and that is something that the media should always keep in mind. It should give ample space and coverage to the minority opinion and not be swept away by the tide of the majoritarian view.
Essay Writing Competition
An Essay Writing Competition on the topic "cleanliness is next to godliness" as part of the activities related to Swachh Bharat Abhiyan was organized on October 17, 2014. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from the Students of MBA Final & First year. Dr. Waseem Ahmad, Director, ABIMS expressed satisfaction over the participation of students and hoped that such activities will continue witness similar level of response in the future also.
Blood Donation Camp
A Blood Donation Camp organized by Al-Barkaat Institute of Education in association with Jawahar Lal Nehru Medical College on October 21, 2014 witnessed whole hearted participation of the students, the faculty and Director, ABIMS who also donated blood expressed the hope that such humanitarian endeavors will be taken up by other institutions also.
Debate
As a part of activities related to Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, a Debate Competition was organized on October 25, 2014. The topic of the debate was "Is Swachh Bharat Abhiyan a good initiative?". The students impressed with their oratory and analysis. On this occasion, Dr. Waseem Ahmad, Director, ABIMS along with the faculty members was present.
Campus to Corporate
Mr. Neeraj Joshi, VP-HR and Mr. Faiz Ahmad, DGM-Marketing, The Chopras: Global Education, New Delhi visited ABIMS campus and delivered a lecture entitled “Campus to Corporate” on October 28, 2014. Mr. Joshi familiarized the students with the nitty- gritty of career-building. He also emphasized the importance of communication skills and made the students aware about the various career prospects for an MBA graduate. On this occasion, Dr. Waseem Ahmad, Director, ABIMS along with the faculty members was present.
Prize Distribution
The prizes to the winners of the debate (First prize- Ms. Samreen Naaz, Second prize- Mr. Gohar Zahid Siddiqui, Third prize- Ms. Manika Varshney) and essay competition (First prize- Mr. Musheer Ahmad, Second prize- Ms. Zeba Riyaz, Third prize- Mr. Yahia Ahmed Laskar) were handed over by Dr. Ahmad Mujtaba Siddiqui, Joint Secretary, ABES and Dr. F.U. Siddiqui, Coordinator, ABEIs. On this occasion, Dr. Waseem Ahmad, Director, ABIMS was present.
Dental & Skin Check-up Camp
A free dental and skin check-up Camp was organized jointly by Shifa Dental Clinic and Cure Well Skin Clinic in Al-Barkaat Institute of Management Studies, Aligarh for students and staff members of Al-Barkaat Educational Institutions on November 26, 2014. The camp was a big success and the organizers promised to continue organizing such camps in future also. Their initiative was appreciated by Dr. Waseem Ahmad, Director, ABIMS.
Symposium 'Human Rights: Preservation & Violation'
A Symposium on 'Human Rights: Preservation & Violation' was organised on December 10, 2014, at ABIMS, in collaboration with the People's Union for Civil Liberties, Aligarh on the occasion of International Human Rights Day. The Chief Guest was Mr. Zafar Alam, Assistant Commandant, RAF. He elaborated on the constant struggle of the armed forces of the country to not let the law be broken and also ensuring that human rights of the citizens are not violated. Prof. Salahuddin Qureshi, Ex-Chairman, Department of ography, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh lamented the downfall in standards of human rights preservation and enumerated the steps required for course-correction; he was disappointed that the worst violators of human rights in the world are claiming to be their best protectors. Prof. Sameena Khan, Department of English, AMU talked about how women in the country are feeling unsafe and the steps that are needed to be taken to ensure that the country in general and the world in particular becomes safe for them. Dr. M. Mohibul Haque, General Secretary, PUCL, Aligarh highlighted the burning issue of human rights violations from either side in conflict zones. The symposium was attended by the faculty members of ABIMS besides teaching members of other sister tutions. Dr. Ahmad Mujtaba Siddiqui, Joint Secretary, Al-Barkaat Educational Society highlighted the main issues currently in focus in the field of human rights. Dr. F.U. Siddiqui, Coordinator, Al-Barkaaat Educational Institutions delivered the vote of thanks. On this occasion Dr. Waseem Ahmad, Director, Al Barkaat Institute of Management Studies, Dr. Samina Fazli, Principal, Al-Barkaat Institute of Education, faculty members and students were present.
Guest Session on “Basic Corporate Practices A Fresh MBA Must Know”
A Guest Session on “Basic Corporate Practices A Fresh MBA Must Know” was organized by Synergy Management Group on December 13, 2014. Delegates from the company emphasized on the development of an effective, individualized plan that is predicated on a deeper understanding of industries, functions, leading organizations, business school resources, and marketplace trends that play a key role in each MBA recruiting cycle. The knowledge that one acquires in the MBA program should provide with a strong overall business foundation.
International Minorities Rights Day'
Dr. Arshi Khan, Associate Professor, Department of Political Science, Aligarh Muslim University and Dr. M. Mohibul Haque, Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh delivered lectures on December 18, 2014 on the occasion of 'International Minorities Rights Day'. Dr. Arshi Khan was of the view that a lot needed to be done to ameliorate the condition of minorities in the country. According to him, the Sachar Committee Report's recommendations should be immediately implemented though he was of the view that even that report suffers from serious flaws in its methodology. Dr. M. Mohibul Haque was of the view that for any country to be called a developed one, its minorities should be safe and secure. A lot of efforts are still needed in this direction. Dr. Ahmad Mujtaba Siddiqui, Joint Secretary, Al-Barkaat Educational Society wished for the progress and development of minorities as it was inter-linked with the development of the country. Dr. F.U. Siddiqui, Coordinator, Al-Barkaaat Educational Institutions delivered the vote of thanks. Placement Activity
Executives from CFC, A fast growing multinational food chain visited Al-Barkaat Institute of Management Studies and interacted with the students on December 29, 2014. They discussed the placement opportunities that exist for the students and expressed the hope that students from ABIMS will soon be working for the company. On this occasion, Director, ABIMS, Waseem Ahmad, teachers and students of MBA Final year were present.
