Abstract   Health of banking sector of the nation reflects its overall strength, which is paramount for future growth, social confidence and global political dominance. Evaluating performance of banking sector in the period of financial crises is herculean task and requires scientific and judicious approach to justify the factors involved. To meet out the global industrialization and economic competition in the period of existing and unpredictable financial crises, banks require efficient, effective and futuristic strategy and also invite evaluation of its performance and test the validity and authenticity of prevailing hypothesis that Indian Banking Industry is performing badly in crisis time and was adversely impacted due to moving global financial crises. Methodology adopted to evaluate and analyze the performance of Indian Scheduled Commercial Banks was to examine the trend of three most significant parameters / ratios applicable for banking industry (Net Non Performing Assets as a Percentage of Net Advance, Capital Adequacy Ratio and Return on Assets). Further single composite weighted average of all Nationalized Banks, Private Sector Banks and Foreign Banks in India has been taken to analyze the trend. The period taken for study is 2005-06, 2006-07 & 2007-2008. The study revealed the fact that despite growing financial crises globally, Indian Banking Industry is stable and it performing well in competitive standard according to Basel Norms. It has also been revealed that during contemporary period it has been growing gradually and has set parameters for other nations to follow
