Abstract   Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to measure financial performance of Public Sector Commercial Banks in India. Design/methodology/approach: The researchers have collected, compiled and analyzed publically available data. The data related to income, expenditure and profit was collected from the annual reports of RBI over the period 2005 to 2013. Nonparametric inferential statistical tools were used to arrive at conclusion. Findings: The results suggest that the nationalized banks’ performance is better than SBI group. Research limitations: The study depends more on empirical procedures rather than theoretical proof. The researcher has drawn conclusion analyzing the secondary data over a period of nine financial years. The sample size for the study was only two groups of banks. Practical implications: Financial performance represents the operational and financial efficiency for the banks. A better financial performance indicates the ability of banks to meet the modern day challenges of banking in globalised economy. Originality: The present study concentrates on matters like; does the growth rate of two groups of Public Sector Commercial Banks operate in India differently? Is it possible to map the growth rate and financial performance of banks through nonparametric statistical tools?
